Why Offline Learning Still Matters (Even When There's an App for That)

Learning Leopard is a maths platform, so you might expect us to say "more screen time = more learning." We're not going to say that. The reality is that the best learning for primary-age children happens through a mix of online and offline activity. The Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health found that rigid screen time limits aren't particularly evidence-based, but they were clear on one thing: screens shouldn't displace physical activity, sleep, or face-to-face interaction. For maths specifically, there are things a screen does well and things it doesn't. What screens do well

Instant feedback: your child knows immediately whether they got it right, which matters for building confidence Adaptive sequencing: a good platform adjusts difficulty in real time, something a worksheet can't do Consistency: 10 minutes a day on an app is easier to maintain than finding and printing new worksheets each week

What screens don't do

Physical manipulation: Research from the University of Cambridge consistently shows that handling physical objects such as counters or fraction tiles helps children build mental models, particularly in early KS2 Conversation: When your child explains their thinking out loud ("I know it's three-quarters because..."), they're consolidating understanding in a way that tapping a screen doesn't replicate. Ofsted's 2023 maths research review emphasises mathematical talk as central to deep learning Real-world application: Cooking, shopping, measuring for a shelf. These aren't maths practice in the traditional sense, but they're where children see that maths is actually useful

A practical balance A reasonable approach for a KS2 child might look like:

3–4 short online sessions a week (10–15 minutes each) on a platform like LearningLeopard for structured practice Everyday maths conversations, "How much change will we get?" or "If we halve this recipe, how much flour?" One hands-on activity a week, board games like Monopoly, card games like 21, building projects that involve measurement

The point isn't to limit screens for the sake of it. It's to make sure the screen time your child does have is supplementing richer learning, not replacing it.
